Female pilots It is heartening that Air Deccan (Bangalore) has employed 34 female pilots. It is a matter of joy especially for women. Indian women have proved that they will reach greater heights, if they are given equal rights and opportunities with men in every field. The female pilots are a source of inspiration for all women and particularly to those who opt for flying as their career. Lilly Ramadurai, Kovilpatti. Reading habit This has reference to the news item `A campaign to spread reading habit' (The Hindu, September 18). It is nice to note that the Department of Communication, Madras Christian College has organised an event called "turn the page" to encourage youth, particularly students, to nurture the habit of reading. At the inaugural function, T.N. Seshan, former Chief Election Commissioner, has rightly stressed the value and importance of reading, as knowledge gained from reading books remained etched in memory. At present, many students who evince great interest in browsing the Internet and sending SMS find no time to read valuable books. Therefore, other colleges and schools may emulate Madras Christian College to make their students read books. S. Nallasivan, Tirunelveli. Public library Vazhavallan is a big village in that it has a good population. A well-known higher secondary school is there. Unfortunately, the village lacks a proper public library. At the same time, it is interesting to note that most of the locals have the habit of reading newspapers and books regularly. Till date, they do not have proper resources to keep themselves abreast of the latest happenings around the world. Therefore, I request the officials concerned to set up a library at Vazhavallan. P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Vazhavallan. Start work Veppamoodu junction in Nagercoil is a crowded place and it is very difficult to cross from one end of the road to the other side and vice versa. Accidents occur every now and then. There are many business establishments in and around tower junction. With the result, passengers land at Veppamoodu junction and this is the place where vehicles from four directions criss-cross witnessing many fatal accidents. There was a proposal to construct an overbridge connecting Anna bus stand and Veppamoodu junction to ease congestion. Delay in getting the approval is the stumbling block. V. Kumar, Thekkurichy, Kanyakumari district. Internship Hats off to Madras University Vice-Chancellor for making internship compulsory for all postgraduate students from the next academic year. University Grants Commission should take cue from his view and make internship compulsory in all universities also. Arts and science colleges should also arrange internship programmes. A. Subramanian, Rajapalayam.
Kovilpatti.
