`Sonia Vihar on the brink of closure'

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Within days of being formally inaugurated with great fanfare, the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant here is on the brink of closure due to stoppage of water supply by the Uttar Pradesh Government, Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan has alleged.

Expressing concern at the development, Dr. Vardhan said the closure of the plant would result in stoppage or reduction of water supply to over 40 lakh residents of Delhi.

Vowing to fight for the rights of the citizens, the BJP leader charged that both the Centre and the Delhi Government had kept the people of the Capital in the dark from the very beginning about the status of the Sonia Vihar plant. Recalling that during its inauguration tall claims were made that with the launch of the Rs. 880-crore plant the citizens' drinking water problem would be solved to a great extent, Dr. Vardhan said the BJP would not allow public money to be wasted.

Wondering what went wrong with the understanding that was reached between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on the supply of raw water for the water treatment plant, Dr. Vardhan said the plant was started with great difficulty on August 8. "As such, with the supply of water being stopped from Monday, the plant has actually served people for less than two months."
