Gandhi Jayanti celebrated

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri were observed with fervour in the district.

In Gulbarga, the former Chief Minister and leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly N. Dharam Singh participated in the celebrations at the District Congress Committee office. He offered garlands to the portraits of both the leaders.

Mr. Singh called upon the younger generation to adopt the principles of non-violence and religious tolerance as preached and practised by the two leaders.

People protect the country's secular credentials and integrity and not allow communal elements to divide society.

Agriculture Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Dharshanapur participated in the celebrations held at the Janata Dal (Secular) office in the public garden.

`Preachings relevant'

Mr. Dharshanapur told party workers that the ideals and preachings of Mahatma Gandhi were still relevant.

Many organisations held Gandhi Jayanti celebrations.
