CHENNAI: A committee headed by former Anna University Vice-Chancellor E. Balagurusamy is now in charge of training administrators of higher educational institutions in the country. The four-member committee, constituted recently by the University Grants Commission, will work on "training and development of education administrators in higher education." Prof. Balagurusamy told reporters that the aim was to suggest training requirements for education administrators of Indian universities starting from vice-chancellors down to assistant registrars. The National Policy on Education in 1986 and later its review in 1992 had suggested the need for training the educational administrators, but "it has not taken off... . and now the new UGC Chairman, Sukhadeo Thorat, has initiated the process by forming the committee." The committee includes a nominee from the Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, Prof. B.S. Shonde, former Vice Chancellor of Goa University, and a Union Ministry representative.
Officials identified
"We have identified six levels of officials for training, including vice-chancellors, registrars, deans, pro-vice-chancellors, head of departments, deputy registrars, finance officers, assistant registrars and senior faculty who are likely to become heads of departments," he said. The committee would identify the training needs of each level, the duration, core training modules and places for training.
