KURNOOL: Dasara was celebrated with religious fervour in the city and different towns of Kurnool district on Monday. A huge rally was taken out in the old city to Jammichettu temple near Johrapuram. Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy, MP Kotla Jayasuryaprakasa Reddy and others took part in the celebrations at Jammichettu. B. Malla Reddy, SP, and other officials were also present. An estimated 25,000 people took part in the colourful rally and congregated at Jammichettu. After the rituals, devotees exchanged pleasantries and presented the leaves of `jammi' in reverence to elders and friends. The police deployed a huge force to supervise the procession. At Adoni, devotees gathered at the municipal ground to witness the burning of effigies of demon kings Ravana and Kumbhkarna. Processions were taken out in all towns and villages.
Police deployed
Around 150 personnel led by Deputy SP, three inspectors and 10 sub-inspectors were deployed at Sri Mala Malleswara Swamy temple at Devaragattu near Holagunda where people of neighbouring villages fight with clubs around midnight to take the deity to their village. A medical centre was also opened to treat the injured persons. The fight starts around midnight when the men armed with sticks beat each other to hijack the deities.
