NEW DELHI: Virenderjit Singh's penalty corner conversion at the stroke of half time steered Border Security Force (BSF), Jalandhar, to a solitary goal victory over Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in a league match of the 17th Lal Bahadur Shastri hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Monday. BSF dominated the proceedings against qualifiers ONGC, but after Virenderjit's goal, it failed to break into the opponent's forte. BSF came close to scoring in the second-half, but messed up chances. Earlier on Sunday, ONGC and Punjab National Bank won their respective matches and made it to the league phase. Mohammed Fahad scored two, including the golden goal in the 80th minute as ONGC won 3-2 against National Academy. Prabodh Tirkey put ONGC ahead in the 12th minute before Amarjeet equalised for the Academy team in the 27th minute. Fahad's 36th minute strike put ONGC again in lead, but Jayanta levelled the scores in the 61st minute to force the match into extra-time. In the second match, the bankmen defeated Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) 4-0 with Gurvinder Singh scoring thrice, in the 15th, 49th and 62nd minutes. Bikash Topp was the other scorer for the winner.
