`Nearly 5,000 trees have been marked for felling'

FOR A CAUSE: A group of environmentalists led by Ananth Hegde Ashishar (third from left) who are demanding that the `Devara Kaadu' be protected.

SHIMOGA: Environmental organisations Vriksha Laksha Andolana and the Seva Sagar claim to have exposed the design to clear the "Devara Kaadu" in the Sharavathi valley of the Western Ghats.

They said that the "Kaanu Bana" (forest park) developed in an area of 300 acres at Aduru and Tumarikoppa villages near Anandapuram in Sagar taluk were being allowed to be cleared by private persons in the name of "Khate Kaanu."

In a press note, convener of Vriksha Laksha Andolana B.H. Raghavendra said that a similar attempt was being made to clear the forest area spread over 300 acres at Yadehalli village forming part of the Yaduru Gram Panchayat where nearly 5,000 well grown trees were marked for being axed.

He charged that some persons had planned to clear the forest on the basis of revenue records that recognised the area marked for clearance as "Ondane Kaanu" and "Khate Kaanu". Mr. Raghavendra said that the according to the records of the forest committee, constituted by the Forest Department, at Aduru village, "Kaanu Bana" were recognised as "Sarkari Kaanu" (government forest) where there was a small ancient temple in the middle of the forest. He pointed out that the Vriksha Laksha Andolana and the Seva Sagar, which had been conducting a joint campaign since 1990s for protection of "Devara Kaadu" in the Western Ghats, recently sent a study team to find out the status of "Kaanu Bana."
