The Hindu-Young World Quiz on Thursday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Actor Indrajith Sukumaran, who plays college casanova in filmmaker Lal Jose's campus thriller Classmates, will be the chief guest at the seventh edition of The Hindu-Young World Quiz 2006, which will be held here on Thursday.

Expressing his desire to attend the event, the actor told The Hindu: "In this age when people do not have the time to read, it is wonderful to know that students are spending so much time for gathering facts and information."

"Quiz is an intellectual exercise and a test of one's intellect. I am looking forward to it," the actor said.

The venue is AKG Hall and the programme will get under way at 2 p.m. The quiz will cover the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Kanyakumari.

Students from classes X to XII are eligible to participate. Each school can send a maximum of three two-member teams. The response from schools so far is overwhelming.

The last date for registration is Tuesday. The contact person is T.S. Lakshminarasimhan, Regional General Manager, The Hindu, Airport Road, Vallakkadavu, Thiruvananthapuram- 695 008, (Phone: 0471- 2502001).

Prizes galore in cash and kind await the winners and the audience who attend the event. The winner will receive Rs.8,000 in cash. The prizes for the second and third places are Rs.6,000 and Rs.4,000.

Eveready is the title sponsor of the event and Jamaai Ice-cream is the associate sponsor.

Following are the national sponsors - State Bank of Travancore, Britannia Tiger biscuits, Garden City College, HP Invent Printers, Reliance Hello, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Cycle Brand Agarbathis, Vizag Steel, Reynolds and Penguin. Maaza is the official drink and SS Music is the TV sponsor.

The regional sponsors are Nutrifud Cakes, Vijayalaxmi Cashew Co., Quilon Radio Service, Babas Colour Lab, Mahindra Holidays, British Library and Veegaland. The event is managed by Quizwallahs.

The programme at each centre will consist of a written preliminary round in which all the registered teams can participate.

The six teams clearing the preliminary round will vie for the top honours at each centre.

The winning team will be invited to participate in the all-India finals to be held at Madurai on November 14, Children's Day.
