Medical seats to go up by 450

Special Correspondent

With three new medical colleges coming into being, 450 seats are added

HYDERABAD: The number of medical seats in the State will go up by 450 and reach a high of 4,700 when the three new medical colleges, announced by the Government on Sunday, come into existence in Adilabad, Srikakulam and Prakasam districts.

With this, the number of medical colleges will increase to 14. At present, 1,600 MBBS seats are available in the 11 Government medical colleges and 2,650 in 21 private ones. According to an estimate, the new medical colleges will require a budget of Rs. 125 crores each--Rs 80 crores for infrastructure and Rs. 45 crores for equipment, apart from 100 acres of land each. Besides, annual maintenance cost is put at Rs. 22 crores each.

"The expenditure, though high, is worth it," says Health Minister K. Rosaiah, referring to the need to correct the regional imbalance and provide professional courses in the backward areas. I. V. Rao, Director, Medical Education, talking to The Hindu here on Monday, assessed 100 acres of land as "a must" for each college as "space is required not only for a 750-bed hospital, buildings for college, hostel and administrative block but also for future needs that include a nursing college." Paper work would begin immediately for three colleges, he added.

New engineering colleges of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, to be located at Karimnagar and Vizianagaram, are likely to provide 1,000 seats, taking the total engineering seats in the State to 99,000.

The present 274 engineering colleges, out of which only four (Anantapur, Pulivendula, Kakinada and Hyderabad) are of JNTU, now have 98,000 seats.
