Sale of khadi products launched

Target for the district for 2006-2007 fixed at Rs. 35 lakh

Udhagamandalam: The need to practice what one preached was emphasised by the Nilgiris Collector, Santosh K. Misra, while launching the sale of Khadi products to mark the Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations here on Monday.

Stating that the birthday of the Mahatma was of considerable significance to the nation, he said that everyone should strive to live up to his lofty ideals.

Adverting to the activities of the Khadi and Village Industries Board here, he said that it was implementing and assisting a number of schemes. Stating that the sales target of the board in the district for 2006-2007 was Rs. 35 lakh, Mr. Misra added that the revenue during 2005-2006 was Rs. 29 lakh. The rebate for Diwali ranged between 20 and 30 per cent.

Urging the people to patronise the board, he said that it would help a large number of persons. Among those dependent on the board were honey gatherers, soap manufacturers, eucalyptus oil distillers, khadi weavers and potters.

Mr. Misra honoured two freedom fighters on the occasion. The Information and Public Relations Officer, M.N. Krishnasamy, welcomed the gathering. The Municipal Commissioner, Seeni Ajmal Khan, and the president, Nilgiris Religious Integration Peace Committee, B.K. Krishnan, also spoke. The Inspector of Cottage Industries, S. Manoharan, proposed a vote of thanks.
