Reporter's Diary

Good omen or bad omen

For a certificate distribution function recently organised by an educational institution, organisers had printed invitations saying the event would commence at 10 a.m. Much to the surprise of the punctual few who were there, a member of the organising team said, "How could we begin at 10? Rahu Kaalam gets over only at 10.30." However, it was another matter that the function actually began at 10.45 a.m.

Haphazard parking of vehicles

Till a few years ago, it was a pleasure to visit the Elliots Beach at Besant Nagar.

But, today it has turned extremely crowded and the visitors' vehicles are becoming a menace for the local residents. Many car owners wereunable to find a parking slot, conveniently park the vehicles in the nearby streets, leaving little space on the road.

Due to this the local residents are unable to take their vehicles out.

It would also be difficult for two vehicles to pass through the street at the same time. The residents want the traffic police to intervene and keep a check on the haphazard parking of vehicles in the once-peaceful locality.

Inadequate planning, bane of residents

Inadequate planning has become the bane of residents in Shenoy Nagar, adjacent to the bridge spanning the Cooum near the Choolaimedu traffic signal. Traffic headed for the Poonamallee High Road is being diverted through narrow residential streets. The broader road that was used originally has been converted into a one-way to avoid chaos at the newly inaugurated Harrington Road Subway.

The new arrangement has ensured that a street little more than five feet across, frequented by children on their way to school and with a ration shop situated at one corner, is used by trucks, cars and two-wheelers headed for the Poonamallee High Road at all hours..
