Manmohan meets Mandela, "greatest living Gandhian"

Harish Khare

Pretoria: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seems to be keeping august company. Last month it was the iconic Fidel Castro, this month it is the legendary Nelson Mandela. Dr. Singh met Mr. Mandela on Monday evening.

After a 20-minute meeting at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg, Dr. Singh described Mr. Mandela as "the greatest living Gandhian." His contribution to Africa and the world was "awe-inspiring."

Mr. Mandela walked Dr. Singh out, and told the media that he recalled meeting President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam (in September 2004) and was now happy to receive Dr. Singh.

Earlier, Dr. Singh inaugurated a permanent exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi at the Old Fort, on Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. South African President Thabo Mbeki also attended the function.

He said the 2005 Gandhi Peace Prize would go to Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
