Corrections and Clarifications

The sentences in "Mahatma's leadership unparalleled: Mbeki" (October 3, 2006) was: "The highlight of the ceremony was a musical tribute to the Mahatma by sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, who played Gandhiji's two favourite hymns, `Vaishnav jaan ko ...' and `Raghupati raghav raja ram ...." and "Earlier, the Nateshwar Dance Academy troupe performed Indian and Zulu dances, a fusion of Indian and tribal dances and music. There was a solo performance by Bharatanatyam danseuse Urmila Satyanarayan." As a reader points out, it should have been "Vaishnava jana to tene kahiye je peer paraayi jaanere" (the first line of which means "Only those people who know the pain of others can be called Vaishnavas.") and Urmila Satyanarayanan.

In "Maharajah of music" — a column on historic events in the world of Carnatic music, as reported in The Hindu — (Friday Review, September 22, 2006) the sentence was: "Jayachamaraja Wodeyar signed the Instrument of Accession in June 1947 and merged his state with independent India." A reader said it was wrong. The Hindu Archives and Index clarifies that the Maharaja signed the instrument of accession to the Dominion of India on August 9, 1947 (published in The Hindu as "Mysore accedes to Indian Union — Instrument of accession signed by Maharaja," August 11, 1947) with effect from August 15, 1947.
