KURNOOL: Lok Adalat is poised to play a bigger role after reconstitution into a permanent court. As part of strengthening the Judiciary and reducing pendancy of cases, Lok Adalats were converted into permanent forums by posting regular chairpersons of the rank of Additional District Judge. So far, six districts were posted chairpersons while the rest would have chairpersons before the year 2008. At Kurnool, the Lok Adalat has been convened on all working days after the permanent Secretary of District Legal Services Authority was posted last month. P. Sudhakar, Secretary of the Authority, who is presiding over the Lok Adalat since last month, said over 100 cases were disposed of so far. After reconstitution, Lok Adalat was also taking up pre-litigation matters relating to pro-notes wherein public could directly make a complaint and get a civil decree. On the other hand, civil and criminal courts were directed to refer cases to Lok Adalat. A Lok Adalat headed by a chairman is empowered to try motor vehicle accident cases involving compensation up to Rs. 10 lakhs.
