Hyderabad: The Central Government has embarked on an ambitious plan to upgrade the knowledge and teaching skills of Urdu medium school teachers in the country. It is proposed to equip them with the changing trends in education and to impart them modern teaching techniques. The Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad, is among the three universities selected for the purpose. The other two are the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI), Delhi. This decision was taken at a recent meeting of the Monitoring Committee on Minority Education chaired by the Minister for Human Resource Development, Arjun Singh. On the lines of the Academic Staff College, an Academy of Urdu Teachers' Training will be set up in all the three universities. Urdu teachers from different States will be trained in these academies. The UGC has convened a meeting of the vice-chancellors of MANUU, AMU and JMI to work out the modalities. The mediocre teaching standards in most Urdu medium schools and the poor results are stated to have prompted the Government to think of training the teachers in their respective subjects.
