Trapped workers rescued

KHAMMAM: Seven workers of a Hyderabad-based company trapped in the penstocks (concrete-lined conduits that channel water from the reservoir to the power house turbines) of Pollur hydel power generation units on Tuesday, were rescued and one of them shifted to the Bhadrachalam hospital. A group of workers undertaking repairs on the penstocks complained of suffocation. They were immediately supplied oxygen and lifted out. - Staff Reporter

6 injured in clash

NALGONDA: Six activists of the Communist Party of India were injured in an attack allegedly by Congress activists at Telugupally village in Devarakonda mandal on Tuesday. Devarakonda Sub-Inspector R. Majeed Ali Khan said a tiff on the festival day led to a clash the next morning. While four persons sustained head injuries, two others suffered fractures. - Staff Reporter

LI trial run begins

Rajahmundry: The Pushakara Lift Irrigation Project's trial run began on Tuesday with two pumps lifting water up to 10 km of the targeted 95 km at Purushothampatnam village, where the scheme has been constructed.

According to Executive Engineer B.V. Poornachandra Rao of Pushkara, the scheme aims at irrigating 1.85 lakh acres. - Staff Reporter

Counselling at UHS

VIJAYAWADA: The first phase of counselling for admission into Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) and B.Sc (medical lab technology) courses for 2006-07 will be held at Dr. N.T.R. University of Health Sciences from October 9 to 15. The second phase of counselling will be held from October 28 to 30.

Housing for employees

HYDERABAD: The second phase of Rajiv Gruha Kalpa will be restricted to those in the income group of Rs. 6,000-10,000 with focus on class IV employees.

A decision to this effect was taken at a review meeting on Tuesday chaired by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy. - Special Correspondent

G.O. on GPF deposits

HYDERABAD: The Government has issued orders giving municipal employees the option to deposit their general provident funds (GPF) in Government securities, Government guaranteed savings schemes and small savings at 50, 25 and 25 per cent respectively. This has been done in view of the fall in the interest rate paid on deposits. - Special Correspondent

4 killed in accidents

KADAPA: Three persons died and three others were injured when two autorickshaws collided at Bojjavaripalle in Proddatur mandal on Tuesday. A seven-month-old infant died on the spot. Two others succumbed to injuries later . In another mishap, a lorry driver Dastagiri died and three persons were hurt when two lorries collided at Thollagangannapalle in Vallur mandal on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

YSR agrees to

shift university

NALGONDA: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has reportedly agreed to shift the venue of the proposed university in Bhoodan Pochampally to Nalgonda town. According to a press release by Nalgonda MLA K. Venkat Reddy he and Home Minister Jana Reddy met Dr. Reddy and convinced him of the necessity to shift the venue. - Staff Reporter

Teachers call for award function

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh State Teachers' Union has objected to the postponement of Teachers' Day awards function on September 5. They wanted the Government to hold the function immediately. - Special Correspondent
