RAMANATHAPURAM: If the famous Mysore Dasara attracts lakhs of people from across the country, the Ramnad Dasara too attracts several hundreds. The gala procession has never failed to light up the minds of the visitors, who enthusiastically crowd along the streets of Ramanathapuram, the erstwhile capital of Sethupathy Kings, who ruled part of Southern Tamil Nadu for several decades. The Ramnad Palace was illuminated and decorated on the occasion on Vijayadhasami day. Led by the temple elephant and Kumaran Sethupathy, the procession started at Sri Raja Rajeswarai Amman Temple, went through the arterial roads, including Sikil Raja Street, Kenikarai and culminated at Maharnonbu thidal. Chariots of various Gods and Goddesses offered visual treat to the visitors. The deities were adorned with jewels and a variety of colourful flowers. Fancy electric lights added beauty to the chariots. Amid chanting of hymns and mantras, the Raja Rajeswari Amman, worshipped as Mahishasuravardhini, slew demon Mahishasuran. "It is a mini Mysore Dasara," said S.R. Kumaresan, a septuagenarian of Chettiya Street.
