Sexual harassment at places of work alleged

  • Signature campaign to be taken up all over State
  • Prime Minister's intervention to be sought on the issue

Kakinada: The Telugu Mahila has decided to launch a campaign against the gender discrimination and sexual harassment at work places in government departments, according to Vanga Geeta Viswanath, president of State Telugu Mahila and former member of Rajya sabha.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, she said more women could get employment now under the 33 per cent reservation, but they were facing problems such as gender discrimination and sexual harassment at work places.

    Mobilisation

The Telugu Mahila, she said, decided to launch a state-wide campaign against the menace mobilising the womenfolk and activating women self help groups. She said a signature campaign would be launched and a letter would be addressed to the Prime Minister seeking his intervention in bringing out a special legislation to protect woman employees from being subjected to sexual harassment.

Ms. Geeta said the existing provisions under the CRPC were inadequate to deal with the cases relating to sexual harassment and in several cases the victims were denied justice. The Telugu Mahila would also press for the implementation of the Supreme Court's recent ruling asking the heads of departments to constitute special cells to look into the grievances of woman employees and directing Collectors to review the working of the cells.

    Dig at officials

Expressing concern over rise in cases regarding sexual harassment, Ms. Geeta charged officials with being callous in initiating action against the erring.
