Land row takes legal turn

Staff Reporter

Rajahmundry: The ongoing `cold war' between people's representatives, Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation (RMC) and APSRTC has taken a turn on Tuesday with the later deciding to move the High Court for justice.

The RTC charged municipal officials and others who initiated steps for digging of a tank in its site with trespassing and violating law. According to RTC officials, a writ petition will be filed on Wednesday before the vacation judge, High Court.

People's representatives, including the Minister for Roads and Buildings J. Ramamohana Rao, Rajahmundry MP Vundavelli Aruna Kumar and MLA R. Suryaprakasha Rao have promised steps for digging a storage tank in the site that belongs to RTC near Nataraj theatre to avoid inundation during floods. However, it could not be materialised following dispute between RTC and RMC.

Meanwhile, after the recent floods, the people's representatives step up their efforts to keep up their word.

On Tuesday, some workers under the supervision of a few municipal officials started digging the fenced RTC land. Immediately, RTC Regional Manager N. Vivekananda rushed to the spot and informed the same to higher-ups. He faxed a note-cum-complaint to the District Collector, the Superintendent of Police, the Commissioner of RMC.

The Regional Manager said the corporation would move the High Court as no vacation judge was available in the district court.

Land purchased in 1967

The RTC purchased the land in survey numbers 718/1 and 719/2 & 3 on December 23, 1967 from Rajahmundry Municipality for construction of a bus station and a depot.

Municipality had occupied 1.25 acres out of 8.5 acres for roads and drains. and subsequently the RTC sold 25 cents in public auction in 1999 for Rs.14.37 lakhs. A committee was constituted in 2002 which decided that 1.55 acres should be handed over to district administration for construction of VAMBAY houses. Finally RTC was left with only five acres of land.
