B.V.S. Bhaskar

Focus on communication skills, body language and pronunciation

Rajahmundry: With multi-national companies coming up on a big scale, there is a demand for candidates with fluency in English for jobs in such organisations.

Keeping in view the important of communication skills, an innovative project has been launched in Rajahmundry. The English Department of the Government (Autonomous) Arts College has designed an integrated English curriculum. Focusing on communication skills in English, which enable students to hone their speaking ability apart from reading, writing and listening, the project launched an Audio-Visual College called `English News Bulletin' in April 2006 as a sequel to the English Language Teachers' Retraining Programme.

The Integrated English Curriculum got the necessary orientation when Bhalabhadrapatruni Varalaksmhi, in-charge, Department of English, was selected for the AP State English Lecturers' Retraining Programme in the beginning of this year.

Audio-visual support

According to B. Varalakshmi and P. Srisaila Sastry, who are instrumental in designing the programme along with P.S.R. Murthy with audio-visual support said that newspaper reading, verifying dictionary for typical words, listening news bulletins, participating in group discussions, news collection, presenting English news bulletins by their own are a few tips to improve communication skills.

`First of its kind'

"So far, two news editions have been brought out that have enabled students to improve their skills, body language and pronunciation. "This is the first of its kind in government colleges in the State," says Dr. Varalakshmi.
