Raghavulu to address SEZ meet today

CPI(M) spearheads drive on behalf of local farmers

  • Farmers, Left and Government lock horns over SEZ location
  • State also announces rehabilitation package

TIRUPATI : The row over the Sathyavedu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) which remained dormant for quite sometime now is expected to take the centrestage once again.

The district unit of the CPI(M) which is spearheading a movement against the SEZ on behalf of the local farmers is organising a convention at Tirupati on Thursday with the state party Secretary B. V. Raghavulu as the main speaker.

The proposed convention on the controversial SEZ assumes importance in the context of the Congress president and United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi striking a note of caution against developing SEZs and irrigation projects at the cost of farmers and their fertile agricultural lands.

    Contention

In fact, it is the bone of contention in the raging battle between the local farmers and the State Government. While the farmers and the Left party question the propriety of the Government acquiring huge chunks of fertile agricultural lands on the S.Vedu-Varadaiahpalem tract for the SEZ ignoring the forest lands available in the area, the Government is unrelenting on the issue asserting that zone already identified was the most ideal location for the massive project.
