Land for church sought

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: R. Jai Singh, president of Viswas Mandir church at Gandhi Nagar, which was removed by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials on September 26, has appealed to VMC Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar to allot six cents of land for construction of a church at another place.

Mr. Singh said in a statement that the members of the church were forced to conduct their Sunday service under a shamiana, as the VMC team destroyed the hut from which they were operating. Though several appeals were made in the past to officials and elected representatives for allotment of suitable land for construction of a church, nothing had materialised, he said. Mr. Singh said when a VMC official informed them that their church would be demolished, they approached local corporator K. Rajasekhar, who assured them that Mr. Gulzar would visit the place on September 27 for inspection. While it did not happen, a demolition team descended and destroyed the church.
