ALAPPUZHA: Minister for Health P.K. Sreemathy on Tuesday handed over compensation of Rs.25,000 each to the kin of seven persons who died of chikungunya in Cherthala taluk. The Minister visited the homes of the deceased and handed over the amount. Those who were given aid are relatives of Juliet, Kattumkal house, Pattanakkad; Sreyeshmanan, Mavunkal house, Andhakaranazhi; Narayani, Chirayil house, Vettakkal; Biju, Biju Nivas, Pattanakkad panchayat; Karunakaran, Palakkad Nikarthil, Pattanakkad panchayat; Sudakshina, Menadimattom house, Pattanakkad; and Ranjith, Tharayil house, Vettakkal. Earlier, the Minister visited Alappuzha Medical College Hospital and asked the superintendent to open separate fever wards for men and women chikungunya patients. Two wards would be opened in the hospital. The Minister also directed the officials of the Public Works Department to make necessary repairs in the fever wards to prevent entry of mosquitoes. The Minister was accompanied by C.S. Sujata and K.S. Manoj, MPs, P. Thilothaman, MLA, P.P. Chitharanjan, Alappuzha municipal chairman, and R. Nazar, Alappuzha district panchayat president.
