Free treatment in Rajasthan

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government has announced free treatment for patients of seasonal diseases in the Government hospitals and health centres even as the post-monsoon afflictions have hit the State's population in a big way after the unusual rains in some parts this season.

The authorities have also instructed the Government hospitals and dispensaries to keep their OPDs open for an additional two hours daily to cope with the rush.

Official figures said there had been only 26 deaths in Rajasthan in August and September due to the diseases. Of these, 20 deaths have been attributed to malaria and six to dengue.

The maximum number of deaths (8) due to malaria were reported from the desert district of Bikaner followed by two each in Tonk, Alwar, Sikar and Jaipur.

Three of the dengue deaths took place in Karauli while Alwar, Sikar and Jaipur accounted for one death each. Health Minister Digamber Singh, who addressed journalists here on Tuesday, said there was no need for panic.
