Traders plan dharna tomorrow

New Delhi: Traders are taking their protest against the court-ordered sealing drive to the MCD doorsteps on October 5.

The agitating traders will organise a dharna on Thursday in front of the MCD office in Chandni Chowk and will submit memorandum to MPs, MLAs and Councillors, Confederation of All India Traders Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said.

Open School exams begin today

NEW DELHI: The October-November 2006 examinations of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are scheduled to start from Wednesday for senior secondary students and from Friday for secondary students.

A total of 702 examination centres have been fixed across the country and 160,682 students will appear at the exams. The exams for various vocational courses will also be conducted simultaneously.

Focus on TB awareness drive

NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant-Governor B.L.Joshi on Tuesday said there was an urgent need for a mass awareness campaign to check the scourge of tuberculosis.

Inaugurating the 57th State TB Seal Sale Campaign organised by the Delhi Tuberculosis Association at Raj Nivas here, Mr. Joshi regretted that tuberculosis continued to be a challenge to public health. He stressed on the need for concerted efforts by the Government and non-governmental agencies to provide facilities for its detection and treatment.

The sale proceeds of the campaign are used by State TB Associations for creation of general awareness about the disease and providing welfare measures including financial grant to needy patients.

Concern over depleting water level

NEW DELHI: The "Jal Adhikar Yatra" which began on September 10 arrived here on Tuesday after visiting 10 soft drink plants in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The Yatra is aimed at asserting people's rights over groundwater and protesting against exploitation of water reserves by soft drink manufacturers.

According to the National Alliance of People's Movements, the soft drink companies are drawing "15 to 25 lakh litres of water" per day from each site because of which groundwater is depleting fast.
