BATTLE READY: Even before the announcement of byelections for Karimnagar parliamentary constituency, the District Congress Committee has intensified its campaign in the town.. Photo R_Raju.
KARIMNAGAR: The Congress, which is jubilant after successive victories in cooperative, municipal and local bodies elections, is leaving no stone unturned to retain the Karimnagar parliamentary constituency in the ensuing byelection. Even before the Election Commission has announced dates for the byelection to the seat, which has fallen vacant following the resignation of TRS president K. Chandrashekhar Rao, district Congress leaders have intensified campaigning. The District Congress Committee is highlighting the achievements of the Congress Government including distribution of ration cards, Rajiv Gruhakalpa, loans at four per cent interest to woman SHGs and completion of pending irrigation projects in seven Assembly segments of the constituency. Surprisingly, the Congress is also using the `Jai Telangana' slogan to lure voters. Some slogans state that Telangana is possible only with the help of Congress and that AICC president Sonia Gandhi is committed to Telangana. In some parts of the district, pro-Congress graffiti says, `Avakasha wadhaniki maaru peru KCR' (KCR notorious for opportunist politics), `Telangana ninadham TRS sontham kadu' (Telangana slogan is not the sole property of TRS) etc. A DCC leader said the party had taken up advance campaigning to educate the people about the achievements of the Government and also to expose the misdeeds of the TRS.We are taking all steps to retain Karimnagar parliamentary constituency, which was handed over to the TRS during the 2004 elections, he said. He also said the party would also expose the misdeeds of TRS president, K Chandrashekhar Rao and how he had deceived the people of Karimnagar constituency by not fulfilling election promises during his two-and-half-year regime.
