dated October 5, 1956: Akalis to join Congress

The Shiromani Akali Dal has advised its members and supporters to join the Indian National Congress. The Dal, after five hours' discussion at Amritsar on October 2, adopted a resolution to this effect. It said the Dal would concentrate on and confine itself to religious, educational, cultural, social and economic betterment of the Sikhs. Master Tara Singh, President of the Dal, presided over the meeting, which was attended by members of the working committee, presidents and general secretaries of the district Akali Jathas, Akali legislators from the Punjab and PEPSU and other prominent Akali leaders. The Akali chief told the meeting that Prime Minister Nehru had told him, "Your honour is my honour." He said Mr. Nehru had asked him to convey this to the meeting. Master Tara Singh said that after this, there was no need for any assurance or guarantee. He appealed to the members to unanimously adopt the resolution before them.
