This Day That Age
The Tungabhadra High Level Canal scheme, estimated to cost Rs.20 crores, which is an integral part of the comprehensive Tungabhadra scheme, benefiting Hyderabad, Andhra and Mysore States, was inaugurated on October 3 by the Governor of Andhra, Mr. C.M. Trivedi, at the Tungabhadra dam site. Mr. Kadidal Manjappa, Chief Minister of Mysore, presided. The occasion was unique in that ministerial representatives from Andhra, Hyderabad and Mysore participated in the function. A beautifully decorated pandal had been erected overlooking the great expanse of the dam waters. To mark the inauguration of the work, Mr. Trivedi pressed a button which ignited a blast charge turning the first sod of the canal. In a brief speech, Mr. Trivedi said he was greatly interested in irrigation schemes, as during the last ten years and more he had something to do with irrigation schemes in some part of India or the other. In Orissa in 1946-47, he was able to assist in the decision which led to the undertaking of the Hirakud project. After Independence, he was sent to the Punjab where the Bhakra-Nangal project had just commenced.
