Letters to the Editor
The article "Gujarat madrasas: an education in terror?" (Oct. 3) is a good analysis of the working of Islamic seminaries in the State. Madrasas have always remained shrouded in mystery. That in some instances, they have been a hub of fundamentalism is a proven fact. It is perhaps time their working was made more transparent.
G.M. Rama Rao,
The article is based on shoddy investigations carried out by the Gujarat and Maharashtra police, notorious for their anti-Muslim bias. There has not been a single instance of a madrasa being closed down in India due to terror-related activities. Madrasas have been traditionally concerned with religious and spiritual education, not politics and militancy.
Salman Zafar,
The article has used the example of four arrested men to malign the name and spirit of an institution that has churned out thousands of scholars who have taken to mainstream activities.
