HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh, which occupied the top rank in percentage of deaths due to road traffic accidents in 2004 (12.2 per cent) continued with the dubious distinction in 2005 also. As many as 30 lives were lost each day in road accidents in the State last year, with one death and four mishaps occurring every hour. According to data made available by H.V. Vivekananda Murthy, Lead Partner (Applied Research), Emergency Management and Research Institute, the total number of accidents rose from 28,902 in 2001 to 38,339 in 2005 in the State, while the number of deaths went up from 8,248 to 11,076 during the same period. On an average, 105 accidents occurred everyday in 2005, compared to 79 in 2001.
Top five
Hyderabad, Krishna, East Godavari, Visakhapatnam and Nalgonda were the top five districts in accidents and deaths during 2005. The highest number of 6,149 accidents and deaths (1,196) occurred in Hyderabad. The second highest number of accidents occurred in Krishna (2,352), followed by East Godavari (2,304), Visakhapatnam (2,061) and Nalgonda (1,958). After Hyderabad, the maximum deaths were reported from Nalgonda (717), followed by Chittoor (653), East Godavari (634) and Krishna (625).Telangana accounted for the highest number of 18,794 accidents during 2005, followed by 13,752 in coastal Andhra and 5,793 in Rayalaseema. The accident figures for the three regions in 2001 were 14,647 (Telangana), 10,111 (coastal Andhra ) and 4,144 (Rayalaseema). Deaths in Telangana went up from 3,856 in 2001 to 5,137 in 2005, while they increased from 3,045 to 4,044 in coastal Andhra and from 1,347 to 1,895 in Rayalaseema for the same period.
