NEW DELHI: The Union Home Ministry is considering the mercy petition submitted by Mohammad Afzal's family to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Tuesday. Afzal has been awarded death sentence in the Parliament House attack case. It has been fixed for October 20 but it will not take place until a decision on the petition is taken. "The Home Ministry has received the mercy petition from Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. We have asked for comments from the Delhi Government," a Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday. He said the views of the Delhi Government had been sought, as according to rules the State Government in whose territory the crime took place had to be consulted. The Ministry had also informed the Tihar Jail authorities that the mercy petition was being studied. Though there is no fixed timeframe for taking a decision on the petition, the process in the Home Ministry normally takes two to three weeks for arriving at a decision, according to official sources.
