Qualifiers spotted

VIJAYAWADA: Qualifiers were spotted in the sub-junior boys' and girls' sections in the National ranking table tennis championship, which began at the DRRM Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday.

Andhra Pradesh's Vivek Vardhan was the lone paddler from the host association to enter the main draw, while six players from Tamil Nadu made it to the next round in both segments.

Among the spectators was Benone Christine Gregory, a Sweden-born Indian coach, who has come to watch the proceedings.

"He has come to primarily assess the talent available in the country. He will be watching all the major ranking tournaments to be held in later months," said APTTA secretary S.M. Sultan. Gregory is also likely conduct a clinic for coaches.

Analysing India's chances at the Asian Games to be held in Doha, Gregory said that teams such as China, Japan were way ahead of India and added that India stood a chance of finishing fourth or fifth in the prestigious event.

The qualifiers:

Boys: Tanmoy Saha (WB), Prosenjit Sarkar (North Bengal), Sudipto Mitra (Mah), Soumyadeep Biswas (WB), Muthukrishnan (TN), Vivek Vardhan (AP), Shreyas Chander (TN), Ayan Basak (NB). Girls: Harshitha Ravi (TN), Narasimha Priya (TN), C.S. Priyadharshini (TN), Antora Banarjee (NB), Suparna Das (WB), Reeth Rishya (TN), Somali Sarkar (WB), Natasha Kulkarni (Mah).
