Election arrangements reviewed in Virudhunagar

VIRUDHUNAGAR : The Virudhunagar district administration and the police have made elaborate arrangements for the two-phase elections to local bodies.

Reviewing the poll arrangements, the Collector, S.S. Jawahar, said that 2,354 polling stations in the district had been divided into 159 zones and zonal officers nominated.

Sensitive booths had been identified as sensitive and additional police personnel would be deployed in them. The contact numbers of all polling and police officials were being gathered to enable immediate communication facility and security arrangements. The ballot papers, now being printed at various presses, would be scrutinised and sent to identified offices with police protection. The election officials, especially those manning polling booths, had been asked to be careful not to give room for any problems during voting.

The Deputy Inspector General (Madurai Range), N. Chebaharaman, said that all steps had been taken to provide enough security in all polling stations so that the voters came out to exercise their franchise without any fear.

The Superintendent of Police, T. Senthilkumar, the District Revenue Officer, R. Nandagopal, the District Rural Development Officer, Gladstone Pushparaj, the Personal Assistant to Collector (Elections) A.R. Kuppusamy, were among those who participated in the meeting.

Elaborate arrangements have been made for the two-phase local body elections to be held on October 13 and 15. Security would be beefed up in all polling stations, said Collector Rajesh Lakhoni.

While addressing a training session held here on Wednesday, he said that ballot paper system would be introduced for the local body poll. Polling officials should ensure the arrival of the required quantum of ballot papers to the respective stations.
