ALAPPUZHA : Five more suspected chikungunya deaths were reported on Wednesday taking the chikungunya epidemic toll to 72 in the district. Meanwhile, hundreds of people continued to crowd at hospitals in the district seeking treatment to epidemic fever. Those who died of suspected chikungunya in the district on Wednesday were Palanikkutty (75), Ottamasseri Nikarthil, Kadakkarappalli panchayat, Shanmugham (55), Thekke Parathara house, Cherthala South panchayat, Joseph (55), Paruthipparambil house, Kanjikkuzhy panchayat. Sabil Raj and Ramesan, natives of Mannancherry panchayat died after a doctor administered injection on them. The deceased went to the doctor for treatment for the epidemic fever. Meanwhile, there were allegations that the doctor did not have a valid degree and the death was out of reaction of the injection. In the meantime, several cases of epidemic fever were reported from Kayamkulam and Mavelikara areas in the district, which were hitherto unaffected by the outbreak. District Medical Officer N.K. Velayudhan in a press release said 1,316 persons arrived at various hospitals in the district seeking treatment for fever. With that, the total number of people in the district who were affected by the epidemic rose to 34,459, an official release said. The DMO said six doctors from Kollam district and five doctors from Ernakulam district carried out medical camps in Cherthala.
