NEW DELHI: The 739th birth anniversary of the great Vaishnava saint and philosopher-poet Sri Vedanta Desika was celebrated here on Wednesday by the National Cultural Organisation with great enthusiasm at the Golf Links auditorium.

Eminent scholars recited slokas and artistes sang from Paduka Sahasranama written by Sri Vedanta Desika. Presiding over the function, NCO Chairman N.P. Seshadri said these sacred slokas are very much relevant in today's materialistic world.

Dividend received

NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant-Governor B.L. Joshi on Wednesday received a dividend cheque for Rs.10 lakhs for 2005-06 from Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited chairperson Neeta Bali at Raj Nivas here.

The Corporation has earned a record profit of Rs.6.2 crores this year with a turnover of Rs.330 crores. Mr. Joshi appreciated the efforts put in by the Corporation for achieving the record turnover and profit.

Visa services

NEW DELHI: To improve services to Indians seeking visas to the United States, the U.S. Embassy here in New Delhi and the Consulates General in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata are opening new visa appointments in all categories, including tourists, to reduce the waiting time for people, according to a release issued by the mission.

NCC team returns

NEW DELHI: A National Cadet Corps delegation comprising two officers and 10 cadets visited Russia from September 22 to October 1 as part of the Youth Exchange Programme.

Now back here, the team called on the NCC Director-General, Lieutenant-General Prakash S. Chaudhary, on Wednesday. In Russia, the delegation visited Moscow and Smolensk Region, besides interacting with Russian students.

Engineer convicted

NEW DELHI: An executive engineer of the Delhi Development Authority has been convicted and sentenced to three-and-a-half years' rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs.7,000 by a city court. The engineer had accepted Rs.4,000 in cash from a contractor for clearing his bills.

According to the CBI, the case was registered in May 2001 against Executive Engineer P.C.D. Pamnani. The complainant had carried out a work at DDA Building on Vikas Marg. He had lodged a complaint with the CBI saying that the engineer was demanding a bribe of Rs.4,000 for clearing his bills.
