CELEBRATING BEAUTY: Gladrags Beauty Pageants president Maureen Wadia with Mrs. India 2006 Shillpa A. Singh

NEW DELHI: With a single-minded aim to sashay down the ramp, a large number of married women took part in the regional selection rounds here on Wednesday to qualify for the Bombay Dyeing Gladrags Mrs. India Contest in Mumbai.

Auditions will also be held in Chandigarh, Bangalore and Mumbai as the organisers go round scouting for contestants in every State of the country. Later on, over two-dozen contestants will get to face challenges each day before battling it out at the all-India finals of the Mrs. India contest in Mumbai in early December.

Describing the Mrs. India pageant as a celebration of the contemporary Indian married woman, Gladrags Beauty Pageants president Maureen Wadia said: "The contestant is a wife, a mother and a multi-talented achiever who maintains that perfect balance between her home, family and career. She walks a trapeze all her life, balancing all her responsibility equally." One of the essential pre-requisites for the contest is for the contestants to have a charismatic personality. "They also need to be attractive and vivacious. Today we have received an overwhelming response from contestants who are professionals like dentists, bankers and information technology consultants," added Ms. Wadia.

Noting that behind-the-scenes support of the husbands has always played an important role in this first-of-its-kind beauty pageant for married women, Ms. Wadia said since men today are equally conscious about fitness and health, the wives are expected to be a reflection of the husband's style and character too.

Milly Tiwari, a contestant from Delhi, sounded upbeat after the rounds were completed.
