COMMON CAUSE: Protesters taking out a rally in Hassan to mark the Karnataka bandh on Wednesday
HASSAN: The bandh called by pro-Kannada organisations was total and peaceful in Hassan district. The bandh was total in all the eight taluks as business fora and organisations, including Law Association, State Government Employees' Association, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and Pragatipara, Kanndapara Sanghatanegala Okkoota, supported the cause. While no untoward incident was reported from any part of the city, normal life was affected as all commercial establishments and industries remained closed. However, hospitals, pharmacies and medical remained open.
Tight security
As a precautionary measure, the district police had deployed personnel from District Armed Reserve, Karnataka State Reserve Police and District Armed Force in the city and beefed up security at a few vantage points. Only Kannada and English news channels were beamed as District Cable Operators Association, extended support to the bandh. As buses stopped plying, commuters faced problems. Activists of various Kannada organisations assembled near Hemavathi statue in the city on Wednesday and condemned the stance of the Maharashtra Government on Mahajan Commission report. Addressing the gathering, leaders criticised the decision of the Union Home Minister to withdraw affidavit filed with the Supreme Court. Later, they went in a procession to the office of the Deputy Commissioner. After handing over a memorandum to him, they held a demonstration meeting. Activists of pro-Kannada organisations visited various parts of the city and requested people to cooperate with the bandh. Responding to a call given by the Law Association supporting the cause, more than 500 advocates took out a procession from Race Course Road and on reaching Deputy Commissioner's office, they handed over a memorandum to him. Davangere Staff Correspondent reports: Bandh in Davangere was total, as all shops, business establishments, schools and colleges, financial institutions and cinema houses remained closed. Most of the roads wore a deserted look as people stayed indoors. Activists of Karnataka Hitharakshna Vedike stopped the Bangalore Hubli inter-city train in the morning and also took out a procession.
