STRUGGLING HARD: A front view of the college in Tirunelveli.
TIRUNELVELI: The Government Siddha Medical College administration here has been asked by the Department of Public Health to prepare a huge quantity of herbal medicines for chikungunya. After S. Boobathi Raja, a first year post-graduate student of Department of Pathology of Government Siddha Medical College, here proved that the disease being spread by Aedes aegypti mosquito could be successfully controlled by administering `vata churak kutineer,' `thirikadugu chooranam,' `linga senthuram' and some tablets derived from medicinal herbs to patients, the State Government placed an order with the college for supply of these medicines in large quantity. As per the order, the Department of Pharmacy, Government Siddha Medical College, Tirunelveli, should produce 20 tonnes of herbal powder comprising 21 medicinal plants to prepare `vata churak kutineer' and 10,000 litres of herbal oil to treat joint pain. However, the department is yet to receive adequate funds and raw drugs required for the preparation from the Department of Public Health. Moreover, existing infrastructure facilities such as machinery and manpower are very limited. "We have to add sandal in the herbal powder for `vata churak kutineer.' Neither sandal nor any other raw drug required for the medicines has been supplied. With the limited facilities available here now, we can prepare only 250 kg of powder for `vata churak kutineer' while the Government has asked us to supply one tonne herbal powder every day, which is quite impossible. If powdered sandal is supplied, we can produce 500 kg in two shifts with 10 persons. We are really in a fix now," a top official of Government Siddha Medical College told The Hindu.
