TIRUCHI: The performance of the teams from the districts, especially Tiruvarur and Thanjavur, winners of the boys and girls titles at the Mini State Volleyball Championship, which concluded in Thanjavur on Saturday, came as a big surprise.

They edged out some of the fancied teams, including Chennai.

"This only proves that the game has got the attention it deserves from the players in the districts as well. Now it is important to keep the momentum going," says the General Secretary of Tamil Nadu State Volleyball Association (TNSVB), R. Manoharan.

The tournament, which saw registration from more than twenty districts proved to be a perfect launch pad for the youngsters. As the Tamil Nadu team (boys and girls) for the forthcoming Mini National Championship was selected based on the performance in the tournament, the players gave their best to draw the attention of the selectors.

"There was healthy competition between the players to secure a place in the State team and they made the job of the selectors tough," Mr. Manoharan says, adding that the TNSVB is working hard to rope in more youth into the game.
