CHENNAI: With elections to local bodies fast approaching, the Chennai city police is gearing up its machinery to ensure trouble-free polls.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Wednesday, Joint Commissioner of Police (North) M Ravi said 200 anti-socials had been detained and after investigation, 40 persons remanded to judicial custody under charges of Section 399 (five persons joining together and preparing to cause panic and trouble in public) among others.

He said the police would continue to intensify operations against rowdy elements and any person found to be indulging in anti-social activity would be detained in prisons.

Out of 2,100 polling booths falling under Chennai city police (north) jurisdiction, about 200 booths have been identified as "sensitive", he replied; adequate policemen and officers would be deployed during the polling in such booths.

Commissioner of Police Letika Saran and Additional Commissioner of Police S R Jangid inspected sensitive booths in the city today and held discussions with the respective police officers, a police spokesman said.
