Thiruvananthapuram
Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday expressed concern over the declining role of the public sector in technological innovations. He was inaugurating `Globelics India 2006,' the fourth international conference on innovation systems for competitiveness and shared prosperity in developing countries, organised by the Centre for Development Studies. Addressing the audience through interactive video conferencing, he said this was more notable in the agriculture sector where public institutions had played a key role in the production of green revolution technologies. Another area of grave concern that he mentioned was about the vagueness surrounding the ownership of innovations in the country. Permitting full ownership rights may work against the consumers and society at large. The third area of concern was with respect to technology diffusion. "Diffusion of technologies is as important as generation of innovation."
