NEW DELHI: A domestic help and his alleged accomplice have been arrested by the North Delhi police in connection with the murder of an elderly woman at her residence on Raj Nivas Marg here on Tuesday evening. The police on Wednesday said it was a case of murder-cum-robbery and they have recovered Rs. 22 lakhs in cash that the accused had decamped with. According to the police, the call about the murder was received by the Civil Lines police around 8-15 p.m. on Tuesday. A person, later identified as Mukesh Kumar, told the police that he was a domestic help in the house of Gurcharan Singh, a spare parts dealer living at 12 Raj Nivas Marg. Mukesh told the police that at the time of the incident he had gone to fetch a packet of tea leaves. When he returned, he saw that four persons had entered the house and stabbed Charanjeet Kaur, the wife of Mr. Singh. He also told the police that he too was attacked with knives when he tried to intervene. However, contradictions began appearing in Mukesh's versions when the police interrogated him at length. Following sustained interrogation, Mukesh allegedly confessed to having killed Ms. Kaur. He also revealed that one Vijay Kumar alias Monu was also involved in the incident. At his instance, the police arrested Vijay Kumar. While Mukesh hails from Saharsa in Bihar, Vijay is a native of Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh. While Mukesh had been employed as a domestic help in the house of the deceased for the past few months, Vijay used to work in the hotel owned by Ms. Kaur's son.
