This Day That Age
Two great thinkers of the world - the Vice-President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, and Britain's leading historian, Dr. Toynbee - on October 4 appealed to the nations of the world for appreciation of each other's civilisation and culture so that mankind could be saved from the horrors of another war. Dr. Radhakrishnan told a select gathering of over 200 intellectuals at the International House of Japan in Tokyo that science had brought the people of the world physically nearer, but psychologically and spiritually they were far apart. A revolution of man's mind and thought which could make him regard each individual as kindred and teach humility and co-existence was necessary, if wars were to be avoided. "We are still nationalists, although we are called members of an international body. We still consider different issues from a nationalistic point of view and interest. Only when our primary patriotism will be to the whole human race, would we be able to have one world family and come psychologically and spiritually nearer." Speaking next, Dr. Toynbee, in a brief address, said tolerance, appreciation and love of each other's civilisation were necessary for co-existence and peace in the world.
