dated October 6, 1956: Elections in February

The general elections will be held either in the early part of February next year or from the third week of that month. The Election Commission is making preparations in this connection. The Commission has asked the Chief Electoral Officers of States to go ahead with the manufacture of additional ballot boxes and repairs of the existing ones, if necessary. A five per cent increase in the number of voters in the next general elections is expected due to the increase in the population of the country. The total number of voters in the last general elections was 17.32 crores, 45 per cent of which were women.
