Islands of protest

Social Genocideis a documentary about the systematic devastation and economic catastrophe faced by Argentina due to globalisation

KOCHI: In one of the powerful moments in the documentary Social Genocide by Argentine filmmaker Fernando E. Solanas, the public come out into the streets beating utensils in protest against the privatisation drive by a democratically elected government.

This film will be screened in the city by Moozhikulam Sala as part of its fortnight-long programme that began on October 2.

The programme Uppinte Rashtriyam (Politics of Salt) is about retracing the Dandi March back to the ideals raised by Mahatma Gandhi.

"The politics of salt is about simple protest measures that begin from one's own home, one's own kitchen," said a pamphlet released by the Sala. It begins from toilet soap, toothpaste and a soft drink. It also reminds one of the lessons given by Dandi March - that no one can withstand a determined population. The film captures the essence of this protest.

Social Genocide was selected for the Berlin Film Festival and the Edinburgh International Film Festival and was the best documentary nominee for the Argentinean Film Critics Association awards.

This documentary is about the systematic devastation and economic catastrophe faced by Argentina, which was once a rich country, due to globalisation, neo-liberal economics and corruption.

Lessons sounded loud enough for the advocates of new economic reforms.

The film was once screened at Kurian Towers and will be screened again at Changampuzha Park, Edappally, next weekend. A musical expression of four seasons, Rituvandanam, by P.P. Saratchandran will be released on that day. The Moozhikulam Sala plans to spread the message of words and books. Five schemes for book distribution will be launched on November 1 - Book Club, Students Book Club, Red Life Book Club, Green Life Book Club and Home Library Scheme.
