Corrections and Clarifications

The report "An exciting start in Frankfurt" ("Newscape", October 5, 2006) stated that it was the 58th edition of the world's largest book fair. A reader said this probably concerned its post World War II record. The reader is right. The website of the Book Fair says, under the heading "The start and rise of the Frankfurt "Büchermeß" (as the book fair was called in the 15th/16th Century): "At the end of the Middle Ages in the latter part of the 15th Century, a few years after the printing press was invented with moveable metal letters by Johannes Gutenberg — a "Büchermeß" is mentioned in the records for the first time along with the Imperial Trade Fairs. Then, in 1750, the Frankfurt Trade Fair catalogue that had appeared regularly since 1564, made its last appearance. It was 200 years later that Frankfurt embarked on its second career as a book trade centre as the division of Germany after World War II forced publishers to re-orient themselves. Under the auspices of the Hessen Association of Publishers and Booksellers, the first book fair in the post-war period took place in Frankfurt from September 18 to 23, 1949 — with 205 German exhibitors and around 10,000 exhibited titles."

A reader points out that "ATM" stands for Automated Teller Machine, and not Automatic Teller Machine (Editorial, "Rationalising bank charges", October 3, 2006). The Oxford English Dictionary also gives it as "Automated Teller Machine".

In "Ensure complete police autonomy: Supreme Court" (September 23, 2006), the sentence was: "The Bench asked the Centre, the National Human Rights Commission, the Sorabjee Committee and the Bureau of Police Research and Development to examine these suggestions and give their views within four months. It directed the Centre and the States to comply with the directions by December 31, 2006 ... ." A reader found the two deadlines confusing. The Legal Correspondent clarifies that the direction to submit a report in four months pertains to a suggestion made on behalf of the petitioner that certain crimes that have national and international ramifications should be entrusted to the CBI. These suggestions will be taken into consideration while passing further orders. The direction given to the Centre and States is independent and has no connection with the direction given to other bodies.

A reader says that the report "Malathi Das takes over as new Chief Secretary" (Karnataka, October 1, 2006, page 1) stated that she is the first woman of the Karnataka cadre to become the CS. Instead, the report should have stated that Malathi Das is the first woman from Karnataka and only the second woman from the Karnataka IAS cadre to become CS in Karnataka. The first woman CS was Teresa Bhattacharya, who is also from the Karnataka IAS cadre. The reader is right. Ms. Das who is from Udupi is the first Kannadiga woman IAS officer to be appointed Chief Secretary. The first woman IAS officer of the Karnataka cadre to get the post was Ms. Bhattacharya.
