Wise move

It was wise on Shashi Tharoor's part to withdraw from the race for United Nations Secretary-General, following a United States `no' in the straw polls. Ban Ki Moon has an edge over Mr. Tharoor because of his role in mediating among the West, China and North Korea.

P. Ramalingam,
Chennai

At a time when the U.N. needs a strong Secretary-General to stand up to the world's only superpower, it seems to be sleepwalking into yet another U.S.-made crisis.

M. Riaz Hasan,
Middlesex, U.K.

The U.S. needs India only to further its agenda, as it did in the case of vote against Iran in the IAEA. When President Hugo Chavez wanted India to support Venezuela's bid for membership to the Security Council, India did not commit itself fearing American displeasure. But now the U.S. has shown its true colours.

P. Venkatesh,
Salem, T.N.

Poor Shashi Tharoor! Even while India was not sure how it would ensure his victory, it announced his candidature. The U.S., as usual, ditched us. Now Mr. Tharoor will lose his job as the United Nations Under Secretary-General too! The least the Government can do is to make him our Foreign Minister.

C. Manoj Mohan,
Thiruvananthapuram
