TALKS: Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy and Australian Trade Commissioner Tony Burchill in discussion with Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Thursday.
Puducherry: Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy, accompanied by Australian Trade Commissioner Tony Burchill, called on Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, here on Thursday to discuss the Union Territory's economic development. Mr. McCarthy was keen to find out details about the flow of tourists, the potential in educational sector, the progress made in agriculture and the types of crops cultivated in Puducherry. Mr. Rangasamy told the High Commissioner that the administration had been promoting agriculture through innovative schemes. The flow of tourists, including those from France and other European countries, had been on the increase over the last few years. There was a 30 per cent increase in tourist flow in the last two years. The Chief Minister said the administration was encouraging industries that did not pollute the environment. IT related projects were the priority here. Mr. McCarthy said, "We will do more in collaboration with Puducherry and possibly invest here." Mr. McCarthy also met Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi and Chief Secretary Pradip Mehra.
