"Scope for heritage tourism tremendous in Puducherry"

PUDUCHERRY: The territorial administration's effort to attract investment from Singapore has moved further with a team from the Island City-State visiting here on Thursday and working out a framework for collaboration in four areas.

The Singapore team headed by Balaji Sadasivan, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs held talks with the top brass of the administration. They identified Tourism, Infrastructure Development, IT and Education as the key areas for investment by Singapore companies.

"We have a good presence in Chennai and want to expand our investment avenues to Puducherry, especially in the tourism sector," Mr. Balaji Sadasivan told reporters.

He said the scope for investment in heritage tourism in , which the Singapore Companies and agencies have the expertise, was tremendous.

The delegation from Puducherry led by Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao visited Sentosa Island, which is the main tourist attraction in Singapore.

The team was also briefed about the Urban Renewable Authority of Singapore that preserves heritage tourists spots, he said.

"One of the suggestions put forward at the talks on Thursday was that Singapore companies could take up individual projects included in the Puducherry Master Plan. The companies could do it alone or find suitable local partners," he further said.

The Education Minister M.O.H.F Shajahan told The Hindu that the Government has accepted the invitation from Singapore to send a second delegation.

The Government would also encourage institutes here to have tie-up with their counterparts in Singapore to offer courses in higher education.
