CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has dismissed a writ petition filed by AIADMK MP N. Jothi, against the withdrawal of police protection for him. Justice K. Chandru said, "... This court is satisfied that there is no illegality or irregularity in the decision arrived at by the State." The petitioner had claimed that to prevent him from rendering legal services to his party leader there were attempts to "maim him or incapacitate him physically or eliminate him" by political adversaries." Round-the-clock security was provided to him 18 months ago.
No threat
Denying the allegations, the Government filed a counter-affidavit stating that the Security Review Committee took the decision in August 2006. After detailed discussions it was concluded that there was no threat to Mr. Jothi and hence `Y' Scale of security provided him should be withdrawn. Discreet inquiries were made after a representation was received from the MP. Mr. Justice Chandru said the same meeting had decided to withdraw the security provided to several other persons, and added that the committee comprised senior IAS and IPS officers. "There is no reason to doubt that they will succumb to political pressure so as to withdraw only the protection given to the petitioner."
Unwarranted
He further said: "The sweeping allegations made by the petitioner against the higher level officers are not justified and are unwarranted. The allegation that they are politically biased is without any substance."
